Probe begins into stamp duty evasion worth crores
LUCKNOW, Sept. 14 -- The district administration of Lucknow has launched a probe into alleged stamp duty evasion worth crores in the first five months of the current fiscal (April to August).
Additional district magistrate (finance and revenue) Rakesh Kumar Singh, who has been tasked with probing the matter, said, "It is a part of a regular exercise conducted to prevent any stamp duty evasion."
Officials file cases against those found to have underpaid stamp duty that could lead to a fine of up to four times the original amount. The alleged evasion was uncovered during an audit of 1,882 property registrations across registration offices in Lucknow, Malihabad, Sarojini Nagar and Mohanlalganj tehsils in past few months.
Singh said notices will be sent to individuals who underpaid the fees, and if the court is not satisfied with their explanation, they may face fines. According to officials, the evasion surfaced during the verification of property deeds. Officials inspect documents to ensure that the stamp duty paid aligns with the property's location, boundaries and constructed area.
