prisoner facing wife's murder charge dies, probe underway

Family members alleged that he was killed inside the jail after he failed to pay extortion money to fellow inmates.
Jail authorities, however, maintained that he died during treatment at a hospital.

They further claimed that inmate Santoshi Yadav demanded the money, and when Choudhary could not arrange the remaining Rs.3,000, he was beaten to death.
"For every undertrial prisoner, it is mandatory to pay Rs.5,000 for a seat in jail. Jail authorities have virtually lost control," the family alleged.
A medical board conducted the postmortem before handing over the body to the family.
Jail superintendent Sanjeev Kumar said, "The undertrial prisoner was rushed to the hospital after his condition suddenly deteriorated, and he died on the way."...
