Priest assaulted after non-veg video sparks outrage in Kanpur
KANPUR, March 10 -- A priest of a well-known temple in Kanpur was allegedly beaten by a group of residents late on Saturday night after a video purportedly showing him consuming non-vegetarian food circulated on social media.
The priest, Prashant Giri alias Golu Pandit, is the mahant of Bhuteshwar temple in Keshav Puram under Rawatpur police station. Residents said he lived within the temple premises for several years.
Police said photographs and a short video allegedly showing Giri eating non-vegetarian food began circulating on social media two days before the incident, angering some residents and devotees.
Late Saturday night, a group of locals confronted the priest inside the temple compound. The argument escalated and he was allegedly assaulted.
Police reached the spot after a call to the 112 helpline and rescued him. Giri later filed a written complaint naming several persons.
