PRD jawan arrested for 60-year-old woman's murder in Almora distt
Rudrapur, Dec. 16 -- A Pradeshik Rakshak Dal (PRD) jawan was arrested for killing a 60-year-old woman at her residence in Almora district in November, police said on Monday.
According to police, the accused killed the woman to loot her jewellery and raise money for his daughter's marriage.
The victim, Ganga Devi, a resident of Sangar Sahu village, was found murdered in her house on November 14. She lived alone in a house located in a remote part of the village, while her husband, who runs a restaurant, used to visit her once a week.
According to police, when Ganga Devi was not seen for some time, villagers went to her house and found her lying dead on her bed. The postmortem examination revealed injury marks on her neck. A "globand", a traditional Pahari ornament worn around the neck, was also found missing from the body.
Almora SSP Devendra Pincha said the case initially appeared to be a blind murder as there were no CCTV cameras near the house and no known enmity between the victim's family and anyone in the village.
"An FIR was registered against an unidentified person and a detailed investigation was launched," he said. Pincha said police teams questioned around 100 people during the probe.
"During sustained questioning, one suspect, Gopal Singh (40), a resident of the same village, was identified. He broke down during interrogation and confessed to the crime," the SSP said.
