Prayagraj launches road safety drive for deaf and mute riders
PRAYAGRAJ, Nov. 29 -- : Prayagraj has launched a new road safety initiative for deaf and mute two-wheeler riders as part of a state-wide effort to support differently-abled citizens. The Prayagraj traffic police have begun an awareness drive in which special logos will be placed on the front and back of vehicles, as well as on helmets used by hearing- and speech-impaired riders. Officials said these symbols will help other motorists identify such riders and drive more carefully around them.
Deputy commissioner (Traffic) Neeraj Pandey said the move is part of the department's ongoing road safety and awareness programme. "These symbols will alert other motorists that the rider is deaf or mute, encouraging them to drive cautiously and responsibly," he said.
To promote the initiative, traffic inspector Saurabh Singh led a rally of deaf riders, including both cars and bikes, from Subhash Crossing to the Reserve Police Lines on Thursday evening.
Participants carried banners promoting the "Deaf Logo," which aims to encourage respectful and priority-based behaviour on the road.
Officials believe the initiative will help reduce accidents involving deaf-mute riders and improve overall road safety. Prayagraj ARTO (Administration) Rajeev Chaturvedi said 26 driving licences have been issued so far to persons with disabilities in the district, although there is no separate category for deaf-mute riders. He called the initiative a practical step towards inclusive road safety. Disability rights groups have welcomed the move.
Aman Saxena, general secretary of the All Uttar Pradesh association of the deaf, said the initiative would greatly benefit persons with disabilities and urged all deaf riders to use the logos on their vehicles and helmets....
