Prayagraj drafts heatwave action plan as mercury soars
PRAYAGRAJ, May 24 -- In view of the soaring mercury, a city action plan is being prepared for protection of people from heatwave. As part of the draft plan, radio jingles and videos will be played at traffic intersections for creating awareness, besides an 18-member committee has been formed under the chairmanship of municipal commissioner for heatwave management.
Additional municipal commissioner (AMC) Dipendra Yadav said white paint or lime will be applied on the roofs of houses in slums, so that the inside temperature could be reduced by 3 to 4 degrees.
The heatwave action plan is being jointly prepared by Uttar Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority, Indian Institute of Public Health, Gandhinagar, and Prayagraj Municipal Corporation.
Recently, a workshop in this regard was also organised in Prayagraj Smart City Auditorium, wherein Atul Kumar Mishra and Akash Mishra of meteorological department had informed that between January 2024 and May 2025, temperature in Prayagraj had witnessed severely high mercury levels. Till now, in May 2025, the maximum temperature had reached up to 45.4 degrees Celsius, while last year it had reached a maximum of 48.8 degrees.
As per the heatwave action plan, UP government had recommended preparing a heatwave action plan for all major cities. In this sequence, giving priority to cities like Jhansi, Agra, Prayagraj and Lucknow, detailed plans are being prepared in collaboration with municipal corporations.
According to AMC Dipendra Yadav, white paint or lime will be applied on the roofs of houses in slums, so that the temperature inside the tin-roofed temporary arrangement could be reduced by 3 to 4 degrees....
