PRAYAGRAJ, Sept. 22 -- Prayagraj Airport is set to become one of the few airports in India to feature a solar carport, marking a significant step toward sustainable and energy-efficient aviation infrastructure. Airport director Mukesh Chandra Upadhyay confirmed that construction is underway for a solar carport in the airport's vehicle parking area. The structure will serve a dual purpose-providing shade and protection for parked vehicles while generating renewable energy through rooftop solar panels. "The solar carport will help meet the airport's energy needs by efficiently converting sunlight into electricity," said Upadhyay. With a planned capacity of 750 kilowatts, the carport will be constructed using steel and aluminum for enhanced durability and strength. Officials added that the design will offer sufficient clearance to comfortably accommodate even large vehicles. Prayagraj Airport currently offers parking for 15 aircraft-eight large and seven small-and operates two terminals. Terminal 1 has a passenger capacity of 850, while Terminal 2 can accommodate up to 1,200. The vehicle parking area can hold over 450 cars and two-wheelers. The airport operates regular flights to major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Bhubaneswar, Raipur, and Bilaspur. Additionally, the Civil Aviation Training College in Bamrauli-affiliated with the airport-already fulfills 50% of its energy needs through an existing 850-kilowatt solar power plant. In line with its commitment to sustainable development goals, Prayagraj Airport aims to become fully solar-powered in the near future, officials said....
