Lucknow, Dec. 5 -- The Barabanki-Bahraich road expansion project has moved a step forward with its approval by the Public Private Partnership Appraisal Committee (PPPAC). The clearance brings Uttar Pradesh closer to launching a key highway upgrade. Under the proposal, the existing route will be developed into a 101.5-kilometre, four-lane highway supported by a parallel service road. Designed for a maximum speed of 100 kmph, the corridor will include eight major bridges longer than 60 metres, 27 minor bridges, two Railway Over Bridges, and 27 underpasses to support smooth traffic movement. Two rest areas will also be created for long-distance commuters. At present, around 15,000 passenger car units travel on the stretch each day, with local traffic expected to shift to the service lanes. Officials note that the upgraded highway will remain suitable for traffic demands for at least the next 20 years, with no further widening anticipated during that period. The combination of four main lanes, service roads, and structural additions is expected to accommodate projected vehicular growth. The project is estimated to cost around Rs.7,000 crore, including land acquisition. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been finalised. A significant component of the plan involves constructing bypasses around several towns along the route. These bypasses are expected to ease congestion, reduce travel time, and improve safety for both local residents and long-distance travellers. Once completed, the corridor will support trade, tourism, and daily mobility between Barabanki and Bahraich. With the PPPAC nod secured, the project now awaits the Union Cabinet's approval. Construction is likely to begin once land acquisition and financial closure are completed under the public-private partnership model....
