Lucknow, May 26 -- The Vidyut Karmchari Sanyukt Sangharsh Samiti on Sunday assured that consumers, especially those dependent on essential services like hospitals, railways and drinking water supply, would not face any disruption due to the ongoing agitation against privatisation in the power sector. The Samiti has given a call for a statewide indefinite strike from May 29 even as the government has also made arrangements to deal with the possible power disruptions due to the proposed strike. In a press statement, the Samiti accused the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) management of trying to create an artificial atmosphere of strike during peak summer despite the fact that no strike notice had been issued by the union. It alleged that the management was using the "fear of strike" as a pretext to extend the tenure of certain directors. The Samiti said that a peaceful awareness campaign had been underway for the past six months to oppose the proposed privatisation of Purvanchal and Dakshinanchal distribution companies. "To escalate the movement, a statewide public campaign will be launched from May 26 to 28 involving consumers in every district," Samiti convenor Shailendra Dubey said....
