Powermen's indefinite strike from May 29
LUCKNOW, May 21 -- The Vidyut Karmchari Sanyukt Sangharsh Samiti, a body representing power employees and engineers, on Tuesday announced an indefinite work boycott from May 29, beginning with limited work boycott and protest meetings from May 21 against the proposed privatisation of two power distribution companies in Uttar Pradesh.
The employees have been agitating for the last six months against the proposed state government's ongoing move of privatising power distribution system in 42 districts under the Agra and the Varanasi discoms.
The power employees' union accused Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) of manipulating financial data to project inflated losses and push discoms into private hands - a move they say endangers public interest and employee security.
The union leaders alleged that UPPCL had tampered with the Annual Revenue Requirement (ARR) figures to double reported losses in a matter of days-from Rs 9,206 crore to Rs 19,600 crore.
"This artificial inflation of losses is aimed at burdening consumers and creating grounds for privatisation in favour of select private players," Sangharsh Samiti convenor Shailendra Dubey claimed.
As part of their protest plan, employees will stage daily demonstrations from May 21 to May 28 across all districts and power projects (2 pm to 5 pm), culminating in the indefinite strike from May 29. The union's top leadership will tour the state to mobilise support during this period....
