LUCKNOW, May 21 -- The Vidyut Karmchari Sanyukt Sangharsh Samiti on Tuesday announced an indefinite work boycott from May 29, beginning with limited work boycott and protest meetings from May 21 against the proposed privatisation of two power distribution companies in UP. The employees have been agitating for the last six months against the proposed state government's ongoing move of privatising power distribution system in 42 districts under the Agra and the Varanasi discoms. Union leaders alleged that UPPCL had tampered with the Annual Revenue Requirement (ARR) figures to double reported losses in a matter of days-from Rs 9,206 cr to Rs 19,600 cr. "This artificial inflation of losses is aimed at burdening consumers and creating grounds for privatisation in favour of select private players," Sangharsh Samiti convenor Shailendra Dubey claimed. As part of their protest, employees will stage daily demonstrations from May 21 to May 28 across all districts, culminating in the indefinite strike from May 29. The Samiti pointed to the Agra distribution franchise model as a warning. "AT&C losses were falsely shown as 54% when they were actually below 40%. UPPCL buys power at Rs 5.55 per unit and sells it to the private franchisee at Rs 4.36, causing an annual loss of Rs 274 crore," it said....
