LUCKNOW, July 1 -- The power sector employees in Uttar Pradesh have accused the state power corporation of pushing ahead with the privatisation of Purvanchal and Dakshinanchal discoms through a covert process, bypassing regulatory transparency. They warned of an indefinite work boycott and Jail Bharo agitation if any tender is floated without public scrutiny. The Vidyut Karmchari Sanyukt Sangharsh Samiti questioned under what Standard Bidding Document (SBD) the privatisation was being processed, noting that the 2020 draft SBD was never finalised and a supposed April 2025 version remains undisclosed. "Discoms with assets worth lakhs of crores cannot be handed over behind closed doors," the Samiti convenor Shailendra Dubey said, accusing the corporation of suppressing dissent by declaring an informal emergency. Meanwhile, the UP Rajya Vidyut Upbhokta Parishad filed a public interest complaint with the electricity regulator, flagging serious irregularities. Parishad president Avadhesh Kumar Verma alleged that a confidential video meeting was held on June 28 between top officials, consultants, and the NIC to modify the tender portal. The aim, he claimed, was to block public access to tender documents by requiring a Rs 5 lakh payment and a non-disclosure agreement-marking an unprecedented level of secrecy. "The final report of the regulator is still awaited, yet the corporation is racing to hand over 42 districts to private players. This isn't child's play. Every hidden figure will eventually be exposed," Verma said, urging immediate regulatory intervention. htc...
