Dehradun, June 26 -- The Congress party on Wednesday lashed out at Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former MLA Suresh Rathore after he changed his stance on allegations about a second marriage without divorcing his first wife. Jyoti Rautela, president of Uttarakhand Congress Mahila Morcha, said while the BJP brags about introducing Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state, the case involving former BJP MLA Suresh Rathore has exposed the party's "double standards" and "hypocrisy". "Rathore not only blatantly disrespected and violated the spirit of the UCC but also played with a woman's social dignity," said Rautela, addressing a press conference in Dehradun. Polygamy is illegal for members of the Hindu community under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, while the state's Uniform Civil Code Act, 2024, banned polygamy for all individuals in the state. Suresh Rathore, the former MLA from Jwalapur constituency in Haridwar, held a press conference on June 15 to acknowledge his marriage to actor Urmila Sanawar allegedly without legally divorcing his wife, Ravindra Kaur. Rathore was the MLA from the constituency from 2017 to 2022. Taking a U-turn, the former MLA said it was merely a "rehearsal scene of a film titled Bhabhi Ji Vidhayak Hai, which is being produced by his production house". "I am not talking about the UCC. I haven't received any notice under the law. These are baseless allegations. Did anyone see me taking wedding vows? Did anyone see the exchange of garlands, or the application of sindoor? Is there any court marriage certificate? It was just a rehearsal scene of a film titled Bhabhi Ji Vidhayak Hai, which is being produced by my production house. This is the third film by me," he said. Earlier, the BJP had issued a notice to the former MLA over "indiscipline", seeking his explanation after facing growing backlash.Rautela said to deceive the public, the leadership of the BJP merely issued him a "notice". State BJP media in charge Manveer Singh Chauhan said, "The party gave him a notice after the news about him came to us through various mediums, including social media. It has been taken under the purview of indiscipline and tarnishes the image of the party." "He was issued a notice to submit his explanation. He (Rathore) met our state president and Rajya Sabha MP Mahendra Bhatt at his residence to submit his reply. The party's disciplinary committee will consider it and take a decision soon," he said. "Our party chief Bhatt has already clarified that, regardless of a person's position in the party whether big or small, such indecent behaviour will not be tolerated. The BJP does not compromise on social or cultural standards under any circumstances," he added....
