Police officer loses Rs.46,459 in cyber fraud
LUCKNOW, July 21 -- An officer posted at the human rights department of police headquarters here allegedly lost Rs 46,459 to cyber fraudsters through a fake link mimicking the online platform of a government bank, police said.
According to police, the fraud took place on July 12 when Mohammad Tariq received a message at around 5:20pm, claiming that he had reward points worth Rs.14,453 ready for redemption.
The message contained a suspicious link. Later, at around 8pm, Tariq clicked on the link, which redirected him to a website resembling the e-banking portal.
The page requested net banking KYC verification to redeem the supposed reward points. Believing it to be genuine, Tariq entered his user ID, password, and registered mobile number. Within minutes, Rs.46,459 was debited from his bank account.
"The fraudsters used a phishing link to capture Tariq's net banking credentials. We are tracking the accounts where the siphoned money was transferred," said an officer from PGI police station. htc...
