Gorakhpur, Oct. 30 -- Police have launched a major crackdown on two rival gangs the "AK-47" and "Red" gangs after a violent clash in Gorakhpur and Maharajganj districts. Deputy inspector general (DIG) Dr S Channappa ordered strict action against both groups following the incident near Aktahwa Bridge under Pipiganj police station on Monday afternoon. The fight left seven people injured. Acting on the DIG's orders, police arrested six accused and registered cases against 25 people involved in the violence. According to police, the clash began over an old rivalry. The fight started when two students, said to be members of one gang, were attacked by around 30 people while studying in an e-library. The situation soon turned into open firing on the street. DIG Dr Channappa said that such criminal behaviour would not be tolerated and that all those involved would be sent to jail. He added that action under the Gangsters Act would also be taken. SP North Jitendra Kumar said cases have been filed under sections of attempted murder, rioting, and the Criminal Law Amendment Act against 15 named and 10 unidentified persons. Police have collected CCTV footage and forensic evidence from the site to identify others involved.
