Pithoragarh, June 27 -- A 43-year-old man, alleged to be the key accused in a June 7 Dharchula murder case, was arrested on Thursday in Champawat district, police said. "Chandu Khair, the main accused in the murder of Kamlesh Danu, which took place on June 7 in the border town of Dharchula, was arrested from Manihar Gooth village in Tanakpur area of Champawat district, with the help of the Special Operations Group (SOG) Champawat," said Rekha Yadav, Pithoragarh superintendent of police (SP). She further said that after committing the crime, the accused had fled to Nepal to evade arrest. "When they ran out of money, they crossed back into India to seek help from relatives. That is when our team managed to arrest Chandu Khair," she said. An FIR was lodged under sections 103(1)(3)(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on June 8 by Govardhan Singh, father of the deceased, at Dharchula police station. "We had also declared a reward of Rs.10,000 for information leading to the arrest of the culprits," Yadav said. "Using CCTV footage and technical surveillance, police tracked down the main accused. Two other suspects - Sachin Nabiyal and Ramesh Raipa - who were also allegedly involved in the case and were seen in the getaway vehicle, are still absconding. They will be arrested soon," assured the SP. Meanwhile, protests were staged by local traders on Thursday due to the delay in arresting the accused with calls for closure of the Indo-Nepal border bridge on the Indian side. The demonstrators demanded stronger coordination with Nepal to extradite the accused. "In view of the growing unrest and law and order concerns in the border town, we have established contact with the administration in Darchula district of Nepal.
