POCSO court gives life term to man for biting flesh off toddler's cheek
Meerut, June 6 -- A Special POCSO Court in Bareilly has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for brutal assault on a 2.5-year-old girl. The court also imposed a fine of Rs.55,000 on the convict. The verdict was issued on Wednesday, said additional district government counsel Rajiv Tiwari.
According to case details, on December 15, 2021, the toddler was playing outside her home with other village children in the Shergarh police station area after lunch. Cheda Lal Gangwar, a known acquaintance, approached the child, held her, and bit her right cheek so violently that a portion of the flesh got detached completely. The child's screams drew her father and other villagers to the scene, but accused fled immediately.
Following the gruesome incident, a complaint was lodged and police filed a chargesheet in April 2022. "During the trial, the prosecution presented six witnesses and nine pieces of evidence. The defense attempted to argue that the accused was mentally unwell but failed to produce any medical documentation or expert testimony. Special POCSO Judge Devashish rejected the defense's claims, found Gangwar guilty, and awarded the sentence of life imprisonment under the POCSO Act," ADGC said....
