New Delhi, Dec. 14 -- Prime Minister Narendra Modi has strongly criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) performance in Telangana, asking the MPs from the state to "shape up" during a meeting with lawmakers from southern states, people aware of the details said. The Prime Minister on Thursday met the party's eight lawmakers from Telangana, five from Andhra Pradesh, two from Kerala and one from Andaman and Nicobar Islands. According to a person privy to the details, the PM, during the meeting, recalled how the BJP has grown from a party with just two MPs in 1984 to being the ruling party. "He said when we had just two MPst, one was from Gujarat and the other was from then undivided Andhra Pradesh now Telangana... but the state leaders have now frittered away the gains and allowed the party to drift," the person said on condition of anonymity. The PM was perturbed that the BJP has not been able to position itself as the main opposition to the Congress after losing the state polls in 2023, winning just eight of the 175 seats with a 14% vote share. In the most recent assembly bypoll in Jubilee Hills, the BJP's vote share dipped further, falling to 8%. "...This has not gone down well with the PM, who said the party has not even lived up to its expectations as a commanding opposition," the person quoted above said....
