Plan to divert Yamuna water to Raj on anvil
Jaipur, Nov. 28 -- Water resources minister Suresh Singh Rawat on Thursday said the state was preparing a detailed project report (DPR) for a dedicated conveyance system that would divert surplus monsoon water from the Yamuna river into Rajasthan.
Rawat said that while major projects on the Yamuna and its tributaries - including Renukaji, Lakhwar, and Kishau - were in development, it was equally crucial to develop infrastructure that could transport floodwaters which currently drain away unused.
"The Rajasthan government has already issued work orders for preparing the DPR of this conveyance system," Rawat said, adding that the document was being drafted in coordination with the joint task force formed by the governments of Rajasthan and Haryana. Once finalised, the DPR will be submitted to the Central Water Commission for approval.
According to the minister, the proposed system will serve dual purposes: it will help utilise monsoon floodwaters that presently go to waste and will also facilitate the distribution of water from upcoming Yamuna-linked projects to several water-scarce districts of the state.
"The mechanism will ensure that Rajasthan not only receives its rightful share of water but can also store and use it strategically for long-term water security," he said. Rawat also urged that the Renukaji, Lakhwar, and Kishau projects be treated as integral components of national water infrastructure for enabling Yamuna water diversion from the Hathnikund Barrage to Rajasthan. Recognising them as national projects, he said, would help secure the financial assistance required for their early completion. Rawat stressed the need for immediate renovation and strengthening of the Gurgaon Canal system originating from the Okhla Head. "Unless the canal's carrying capacity is enhanced, Rajasthan will not be able to receive the volume of Yamuna water allocated to it," he said. The minister said after attending the 9th meeting of the Upper Yamuna Review Committee, extremely important for Rajasthan held on Thursday at Yamuna Bhawan in Noida.
He said that under the leadership of chief minister Bhajanlal Sharma, the state government is taking crucial decisions to ensure water availability to the last mile in Rajasthan.
He added that in February 2024, a historic MoU regarding the waters of the Yamuna was signed, after which Haryana and Rajasthan jointly formed a task force finalising the DPR. He added that Yamuna water was extremely essential for the water security of the Shekhawati region-Sikar, Churu, Jhunjhunu, and nearby areas.
The Minister thanked Union jal shakti minister C.R. Patil and Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini, whose efforts accelerated the process of bringing Yamuna water to the Shekhawati region....
