Pipeline break stalls Barabirwa traffic amid blame game between depts
LUCKNOW, Nov. 26 -- Traffic around Barabirwa (Awadh) crossing in the city remained disrupted for the second day on Tuesday after an underground drinking water pipeline burst during an underpass construction on Monday evening, sending water gushing onto the road and leaving the stretch waterlogged.
Authorities imposed diversions soon after, declaring the Barabirwa-Alambagh route unfit for movement until repairs are completed.
"Commuters have been advised to avoid Avadh Crossing unless necessary, with police stating that normal movement will resume once the waterlogging is cleared," Lucknow Police said in a statement on Tuesday.
An official from the UP State Bridge Corporation, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the rupture occurred because the pipeline's location was not marked in the design shared by Jal Sansthan.
"The 250 mm trunk line was damaged despite construction being carried out cautiously at the site," the official said.
However, Jal Sansthan general manager Kuldeep Singh gave a different version, saying emergency teams began repairs as soon as they received information about the rupture.
"The staff has been working since we were informed the line was broken. The joint will be fixed tonight," the general manager said, adding that water flowed for about 30 minutes before the supply was stopped.
He said the issue related to maps will be probed.
Lucknow Police said multiple diversions have been enforced to ease congestion. Vehicles coming from Para are not being allowed towards Avadh crossing or Alambagh and are being redirected via Tikonhiya trisection.
Traffic arriving from Kanpur and heading to Alambagh is being sent through the Shaheed Path trisection.
Heavy vehicles from the Kanpur side are being diverted from Daroga Kheda towards Kisan Path, while vehicles from Sitapur are being diverted from Indoura to the same route. Heavy vehicles from Maudaha Mod/Zero Point have also been instructed to use Kisan Path.
Officials from both departments said the water supply to the area will be restored once repair work is completed....
