PGI to set up Rs 120-cr care centre to treat complex, rare diseases
LUCKNOW, Dec. 24 -- The Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow, has received Rs 120 crore in supplementary funding from the state government to set up a state-of-the-art quaternary healthcare centre aimed at treating complex, critical and rare medical conditions. The initiative is expected to significantly strengthen advanced healthcare services within the state and reduce the need for patients to seek specialised treatment outside Uttar Pradesh.
In medical field, quaternary refers to highly specialised care. According to officials, the proposed care centre will focus on the management of multi-organ failure and other life-threatening conditions that require the highest level of medical expertise. The centre will be equipped with modern operation theatres, advanced intensive care units and a dedicated team of expert specialists to cater to critically ill patients.
As part of the project, SGPGIMS will function as a central hub under a hub-and-spoke model, connecting all medical colleges across the state through telemedicine.
The network will allow specialists at the SGPGIMS to provide real-time consultation and clinical guidance to doctors managing severe and complex cases in peripheral medical colleges.
The telemedicine service has already been rolled out in six medical colleges and is expected to expand statewide.
Registrar, SGPGIMS, Col Varun Bajpai said the work on developing the quaternary care centre has already begun. He added that the funding will be utilised to ensure availability of advanced infrastructure and expert care for critically ill patients.
The quaternary care centre is part of a broader roadmap to upgrade SGPGIMS facilities. Planned expansions include strengthening the departments of critical care medicine, emergency medicine and the renal transplant centre....
