Parl panel seeks details of action against influencers for 'harming' nat'l interest
New Delhi, May 6 -- The parliamentary standing committee on communications and information technology, in an office memorandum, has sought from two ministries details of action taken against social media influencers and platforms that it alleged are "against the interests of the country" in the aftermath of the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam.
In the memorandum, addressed to the secretaries of the ministries of electronics and Information technology (MeitY) and information and broadcasting (I&B), the panel alleged that some social media voices appeared to be inciting violence through their content.
To be sure, the memorandum does not name individuals or platforms.
The note, issued by a parliamentary committee, directed both ministries to provide details of any contemplated or ongoing measures to ban such platforms or accounts under the Information Technology Act, 2000 and the IT Rules, 2021, specifically the Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code.
The two respective ministries have been asked to submit the required information by May 8.
The next meeting of the parliamentary committee is on May 7, to discuss measures to curb fake news.
