Paralympian Sheetal finishes fifth; Deepshikha wins gold in style
LUCKNOW, March 2 -- On a day when Paralympic gold medalist Sheetal Devi finished fifth in the junior compound women's category of the 4th Khelo India National Ranking for Women Archery Tournament here on Sunday, young Deepshikha hogged the limelight in the senior compound event in a thriller.
Deepshikha performed strongly against her opponent, Pathan Mehak, and the two ended in a tie. But in the tie-break, Deepshikha displayed her skill, braving strong winds to secure gold. Deepshikha, who had been leading from the start in the five-set match, made a brilliant comeback against Mehak, hitting one perfect shot after another. By the end of the fifth set, Deepshikha equaled Pathan Mehak's 143. In the tie-break, Deepshikha took the first shot, scoring an accurate X-point and winning the gold.
Earlier, Sheetal from Jammu and Kashmir was defeated by Sandhya from Uttar Pradesh in the junior compound women's category. Sandhya lost the junior women's competition to Raj Aditi Kumari of Jharkhand, missing the gold by just three points. Sandhya scored 141 points, while Raj Aditi Kumari won the gold with 144 points.
Meanwhile, Haryana's archers dominated the finals on the final day of the competition, winning six gold medals in eight categories. Maharashtra and Jharkhand each won one gold. In the senior recurve women's category, a fierce contest was there between Simranjit Kaur of Punjab and Riddhi of Haryana for the gold.
Riddhi and Simranjit faced each other for five sets in the set-point game, after which the winner was decided in a shoot-out. After a five-point tie, a fierce battle ensued between the two, with Riddhi winning the match 10-8 to win the gold. Winners in other categories included, Shweta Singh, Kirti Sharma, Vedika Singh Wagh, Rehanshi Guha, Jiya Yadav and Pranjal Praveen Narvade.
Awadh Eagles clinched the 5th Edition of the Lucknow Golf League, defeating two-time champions Speed Chargers here on Sunday. The title showdown went into a three-hole playoff due to a tie, featuring Bharat Thapar and Aadi Jain for Speed Chargers, and Anand Shukla and Hardik Singh for Awadh Eagles. In the 3rd place contest, Wellness Warriors edged out BBD Rangers in a closely fought match....
