Pakistani couple elopes, crosses into Kutch on foot
Ahmedabad, Nov. 26 -- A Pakistani couple, who allegedly crossed into India after eloping from their village, has been detained in Gujarat's Kutch district, police said on Tuesday, adding that a probe has been ordered into the incident.
The couple, identified as Popat (24) and Gauri (20), belonged to the Sindh province of Pakistan, and has claimed that they fled to escape their families who opposed their relationship, officials aware of the details on Tuesday.
The Border Security Force (BSF) intercepted the couple during an early morning patrol near border pillar number 1016 in the Khavda stretch of Kutch.
"They were stopped near pillar number 1016 and taken to the border post for questioning. The couple has been identified as Popat, 24, son of Nathu Bhai, and Gauri, 20, daughter of Gulab, both belonging to the Mithi village of Sindh," an official said, on condition of anonymity, adding that the couple were not carrying any identity papers or belongings.
The official said that the couple told BSF that their families had opposed their relationship, which prompted them to leave without informing anyone at home and attempt to cross into India on foot.
"They moved out of their homes on Sunday night and walked towards the India-Pakistan boundary through the desert," the official cited above said. The couple was later handed over to Balasar police, who recorded their statements and began a formal inquiry into the matter....
