Pacer Naman eyes big comeback through UPT20L
LUCKNOW, Aug. 20 -- Pace bowlers around the world often pick up injuries while pushing for extra speed and precision, especially when aiming for perfect yorkers, and India's young pacer Naman Tiwari is no exception.
After finishing as the second-highest wicket-taker in India's runners-up campaign at the Under-19 World Cup in February 2024, Lucknow's left-arm pacer Naman Tiwari featured in the quarterfinal of the Under-25 CK Nayudu Trophy in the last domestic season before being sidelined for the remaining matches.
That wasn't all as Tiwari spent this year's Indian Premier League on the Lucknow Super Giants' benches, but the experience proved valuable, giving him plenty to learn, especially under the mentorship of LSG's advisor and former India pace spearhead, Zaheer Khan.
"Although I didn't get the chance to play a single match, I had valuable learning time with Zaheer sir, who guided me on the finer aspects of pace bowling, including speed, accuracy, and finishing," said Naman on Tuesday, a day after taking four crucial wickets in Noida Kings' thrilling two-wicket victory over local side Lucknow Falcons in the ongoing UPTwenty20 League here.
"There was a great bonding with Zaheer sir, and he told me that I was among the fastest bowlers in India with a speed of over 140 km. During the U-19 World Cup, my body wasn't strong enough to handle the workload of bowling at high speeds, but during my injury layoff I focused hard on physical training, and now it's helping me a lot," he said.
He added that in Monday night's clash between Noida Kings and Lucknow Falcons, he stuck to the basics and didn't try anything fancy. "I didn't put in any extra effort with my bowling; I just focused on my game plan and executing with accuracy. That really helped me hit the right areas throughout the match. I kept things simple, just as the coach and head coach advised," said the 19-year-old Tiwari. In fact, Tiwari didn't give the Lucknow Falcons batters any room to play freely, striking early with the wickets of openers Abhau Chauhan (13), Samarth Singh (4), and Aaradhya Yadav (0) in quick succession before dismissing all-rounder Kritagya Singh (15). His spell restricted the Falcons to 165/8. In reply, Noida Kings chased down the target on the penultimate ball, clinching victory with two wickets in hand.
" I'm really excited to make a comeback with a strong performance after being sidelined by injury in the second edition of the UPTwenty20 League, where I could play only three matches. I've been waiting for this opportunity ever since," said the lanky pacer.
Tiwari, who is still awaiting his Ranji Trophy debut for Uttar Pradesh, also praised NK's bowling coach and former UP great Ashish Winston Zaidi. "I'm fortunate to have two coaches in the team and to learn so much from Zaidi Sir, who himself has been a legend of Uttar Pradesh cricket," he said.
"I am focussed on giving my best in the UPTwenty20 League so that I can play a full domestic season, especially in white-ball cricket, as my next goal is the Indian Premier League, where I hope to feature in all the matches for a team," said Tiwari....
