LUCKNOW, Aug. 25 -- It's a beginning with a bang for right-arm pacer Teerath Singh in the UPTwenty20 League here in Lucknow. With 4/37 in the first match against Lucknow Falcons and 4/28 in the second match against last year's runner-up Kanpur Superstars at an average of 8.13, this pacer has almost rocked the event with his performance in just two matches. Being trained under the watchful guidance of former Indian domestic player Anureet Singh, who was a reliable bowler in the Ranji Trophy and played in the IPL for franchises like Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals, Teerath impressed everyone in his maiden appearance in the trials for Gorakhpur Lions and left coach and former UP captain Ankit Rajpoot surprised with his pace and accuracy. "He (Teerath) was most impressive with his speed of almost 135 km and accuracy at the nets during the trials. I was asked by Anureet to keep an eye on this boy and he lived up to the expectations," said Rajpoot on Sunday, a day after Gorakhpur Lions thrilling win over Kanpur Superstars in an UPTenty20 League encounter here in Lucknow. "I saw the spark in the eyes of Teerath at the trials and he did what he was expected to do in the league here. He even touched the 140 km mark in the first match against Meerut Mavericks and showed a lot of grit and determination in his bowling," Rajpoot added. However, Teerath wasn't surprised with his show in the two matches so far as he feels that he kept things normal and didn't do anything special in both the matches. "I tried to bowl on an accurate line with speed and let my deliveries do the rest. For sure, I am enjoying my bowling and will try to grab as many wickets as I can for my side in this league as it was my long pending dream to play in the UPTwenty20 League in the last two seasons," said 27-year-old Teerath. He, however, accepted that he did appear only in the trials of the Gorakhpur Lions. "I didn't participate in any other trials as I wanted to begin with Gorakhpur Lions only. I was unlucky not to get a place in the Under-25 team of Uttar Pradesh last season after missing the trials in 2023 seasons due to an injury," he said. Taking the prized-wicket of Sameer Rizvi in the match against Kanpur Superstars on Saturday night here happens to be Teerath's best so far in the event and he sounds excited. "Rizvi's wicket turned out to be the game changer and it was really an exciting moment for me when I found the batter's stumps flying in the air on an accurate delivery," said Teerath, who praised teams' coach Rajpoot for his valuable inputs. "I didn't get a chance to play in the first three matches this season, but I learnt many things even while sitting on the benches. Rajpoot Sir told me to stay calm as my turn will come soon, and when I got the chance to play against Lucknow Falcons, I put all my energies in the match," said Teerath. "Before every match, I discuss my bowling plan with Rajpoot Sir, who tells me about the playing techniques of each and every rival batters in a match," he added. Hailing from a village Nangal Choka near Hathras and son of a farmer, Teerath has been playing cricket at the Uma Cricket Academy in Noida for the last seven years, completing his basics while playing in the muddy ground in his village. "I felt that bowling was the best option for me and I didn't know much about batting, but now I like batting too," he said....
