Over Rs 15 lakh missing from Post Office account of former HC Joint Registrar
PRAYAGRAJ, Nov. 7 -- In a shocking incident, approximately Rs 15.67 lakh was illegally withdrawn from the account of former Joint Registrar of the Allahabad High Court Ashok Kumar Verma in Prayagraj. The fraud came to light when, nearly seven years after the Joint Registrar's death, his wife, Madhubala Srivastava, went to the Sub-Post Office High Court branch to withdraw the funds from the account after completing the legal succession formalities. Upon updating the passbook, Madhubala Srivastava discovered that the account balance had gone down and the entire amount had already been withdrawn.
Ashok Kumar Verma passed away on June 25, 2018. He had a savings account in his name at the High Court Sub-Post Office branch, which had a deposit of Rs 15,67,669. No one was listed as a successor in the account. After a lengthy legal process, Madhubala received the succession certificate on September 26 this year and arrived at the post office on October 24.
According to the passbook, withdrawals of Rs.4 lakh, Rs.3 lakh, and Rs.3 lakh were made on July 4, 2024, and Rs.5.66 lakh by cheque on July 8, 2024. Madhubala alleged post office staff connivance after her husband's death and lodged complaints with officials and Cantonment police....
