VARANASI, Aug. 11 -- Floods in the Ganga are finally receding in the temple town of Varanasi. According to the Central Water Commission (CWC), the swollen river was flowing at 69.18 metres in Varanasi on Sunday after a high of 72.23 metres measured on August 5. On that day, several localities in the low-lying areas of the city found themselves under water. Whereas the warning point of the Ganga river in the district is 70.26 metres, the danger mark has been kept at 71.26 metres. The highest water level ever recorded in the river was 73.90 metres in 1978. However, the Varuna river had risen to 72.71 metres. The floods affected 6,100 families, and damaged around 2,208 hectares of crops owned by 8,352 farmers in the district, officials said. As many as 6,012 flood relief kits, 7004 quintals of straw, 1,14,322 food packets, 17,406 bananas, 10,272 packets of milk were distributed among the flood-affected people in the temple town. In the district, the Ganga covers a distance of about 57 km, Varuna 65.80 km, Gomti 39 km and Assi 8 km....
