Over 10% of school vehicles found unfit in safety checks
PRAYAGRAJ, July 11 -- Over one-tenth of the vehicles transporting schoolchildren in Prayagraj have been found unfit on various safety parameters during a district-wide inspection drive.
According to data provided by the regional transport officer (RTO), Prayagraj, the district has a total of 2,358 vehicles registered under the "School Bus" category, all of which are required to meet specific safety norms and possess a valid School Bus Permit.
As part of an ongoing month-long inspection campaign covering both urban and rural areas, 1,585 vehicles transporting school children have been checked so far. Of these, 174 vehicles-approximately 11 percent-were found unfit for the purpose. Notably, 40 of these vehicles were operating with expired fitness certificates.
Assistant regional transport officer (administration) Rajesh Chaturvedi stated that between July 1 and 9, 2025, challans were issued for all 174 non-compliant vehicles, and 40 of them were seized.
A total penalty of Rs 2.23 lakh has been collected from the owners of these vehicles.
The inspection campaign was launched in response to recent incidents involving school buses and vans reported from different parts of the division. In light of these mishaps, the Transport Department has initiated this month-long drive to ensure the safety of schoolchildren....
