Over 100 flagged as suspectedillegal B'deshi migrants in Knp
Kanpur, Nov. 25 -- Over 100 individuals were flagged as suspected illegal Bangladeshi migrants in Kanpur after an ongoing city-wide verification exercise covering nearly 1,000 residents of localities with a dense migrant workforce, including Jajmau, Raipurwa, Babupurwa, Railbazaar, Beconganj and the adjoining areas, officials said.
To verify the credentials of these individuals, four special police teams have been sent to West Bengal, Assam and Jharkhand for doorstep checks in the districts where the suspects claimed to have permanent residence - Assam's Barpeta and Dhubri, Jharkhand's Pakur and West Bengal's 24 Parganas region.
The verification has primarily covered tannery labourers, rag-pickers, scrap-collectors and those employed in the unorganised sector.
Kanpur's joint commissioner of police, law and order, Ashutosh Kumar said further legal action will be decided once the field verification teams submit their report.
"This is not about targeting any community. The purpose is to strengthen national security and law and order. The next step will follow strictly as per procedure," he said.

Officials said while around 90% of the individuals verified were confirmed at their stated addresses, the "100+" segment is under close scrutiny due to inconsistencies in documents and traceability.
Notably, all those screened so far were found carrying Aadhaar cards purportedly issued in West Bengal.
In the first punitive action arising from the exercise, a rickshaw-puller, whose verification failed, was arrested nearly a fortnight ago and lodged in jail.
Additional DCP (local intelligence) Mahesh Kumar said re-verification of doubtful cases has already begun.
"The process is continuing. Records that have not been found authentic are being reassessed before final action," he said.
Officials indicated that those ultimately confirmed as illegal entrants may face stringent action, including deportation through the nodal agency, the Border Security Force (BSF)....
