Osteoporosis linked fracture can be life-threatening: Docs
LUCKNOW, Oct. 20 -- Osteoporosis affects over 200 million people globally, yet up to 80% of patients with osteoporotic fractures receive no follow-up diagnosis or treatment. One in three women and one in five men over 50 are affected worldwide, with fractures often leading to long-term pain, disability, and loss of independence, doctors said here on Sunday.
World Osteoporosis Day, observed on October 20, aims to raise awareness about this silent yet serious disease. This year's theme, "It's Unacceptable!", calls for urgent attention to the widespread neglect in prevention and care.
Prof Arpit Singh, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, King George's Medical University (KGMU), said, "Fragility fractures of the hip, spine, and wrist are life-altering events. Don't wait for a fracture to take action." He advised regular weight-bearing exercises, adequate calcium and Vitamin D intake, and timely DEXA scans for early detection.
In India, about 61 million people suffer from osteoporosis, with women accounting for nearly 80% of cases. Estimates suggest one in three women and one in eight men in India are affected....
