LUCKNOW, Nov. 16 -- Opposition parties on Saturday condemned the move by the Uttar Pradesh government to withdraw charges against all those accused in the 2015 mob lynching of Mohammad Akhlaq in Greater Noida's Dadri. In a post on X, CPI(M) general secretary MA Baby wrote, "A decade after the horrific mob lynching of Mohammad Akhlaq, the Uttar Pradesh government is now reportedly seeking to withdraw charges against all the accused, including the son of BJP leader Sanjay Rana." Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai said: "Some people kill a person in full public view. When a case against them is filed, the government tries to weaken the cases against killers. It is a matter of justice not just to the victim and family but to the entire society and in such a matter, the government should not interfere by taking back charges." Samajwadi Party national spokesperson Abdul Hafiz Gandhi said: "The Dadri lynching was a deeply disturbing incident that shook the conscience of the entire nation. The Samajwadi Party firmly believes that justice in cases of mob lynching is essential not only for the victim's family but for maintaining society's faith in the rule of law. Serious criminal cases must not be influenced by political considerations or administrative expediency." On the night of September 28, 2015, a mob of locals at Dadri's Bisada village attacked Akhlaq, 55, and his younger son Danish at their residence over allegations of slaughtering a cow and storing its meat for consumption.
