Only Kanwars of 10ft in height can enter state: U'khand police
Haridwar, July 15 -- To ensure smooth and safe conduct of the ongoing Kanwar Yatra, the authorities have announced that only Kanwars measuring up to a maximum height of 10 feet and a width of 12 feet will be allowed to enter the state.
"For smooth management of the Kanwar Mela, hassle-free traffic flow, and above all, the safety of Kanwariyas and local commuters, it has been decided to impose a size cap of 10 feet height and 12 feet width for all Kanwars entering the state. Any religious structure or vehicle-mounted Kanwar exceeding these dimensions will be denied access into Uttarakhand," Pramendra Dobhal, Haridwar senior superintendent of police (SSP), said on Monday, adding that the decision was taken in coordination with police forces from neighbouring states.
He further said that tThe restrictions are part of a comprehensive plan to ensure public safety, streamline traffic, and prevent accidents during the Kanwar Mela, which sees thousands of Shiva devotees (Kanwariyas) flocking to Haridwar.
"We request all devotees to respect these guidelines. Everyone is welcome, but only within the prescribed norms," he added.
In a related crackdown, the Mela police stopped around 50 large DJ trucks and vehicles equipped with oversized stereo systems at entry points such as Manglaur, near the Uttarakhand-Uttar Pradesh border, and Kuankheda along the Roorkee-Haridwar state highway. Police personnel directed the Kanwariyas to either return the music-laden vehicles or proceed on foot or in other allowed vehicles without the unauthorised sound systems.
"Many of these sound systems protrude dangerously from vehicles and create significant safety risks. Such equipment is being removed, and violators are being requested to comply with the norms. Our focus is on ensuring safety. All Kanwar vehicles are being monitored and checked around the clock," said Laksar police station in-charge Rajeev Rauthan.
Meanwhile, Haridwar district magistrate Mayur Dixit and SSP Pramendra Dobhal conducted field inspections across multiple sites in the Mela zone to review the on-ground preparations and security arrangements.
In addition to the enforcement on Kanwar sizes and sound systems, Mela police continued anti-encroachment operations in the core fair area. Several unauthorised temporary setups and roadside vendors were cleared from key locations....
