Only Congress fighting to save MGNREGA, says Avinash Pandey
LUCKNOW, Feb. 3 -- Congress national general secretary and UP in-charge Avinash Pandey on Monday claimed that only his party workers are fighting to save the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
Addressing 'Samvidhan Samvad and Save MGNREGA' campaign at the Congress office here marking completion of 20 years of the MNREGA, he claimed that after enactment of the law under the then Congress-led UPA government, landless farmers and labourers were given such power that they could decide themselves when and how much work they would do.
"The scheme was recognised as an example throughout the world, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, it proved its usefulness, demonstrating that it is truly a people's law," Pandey further claimed.
Presiding over the event, Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai said: "The Save MGNREGA campaign is underway across India under the leadership of Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi."
"The government is denying people their rights as it is fundamentally anti-farmer and anti-labourer and the Union Budget 2026 once again confirms it. There is no concrete plan in the entire budget that appears to strengthen either farmers, landless labourers or the rural economy," he alleged.
The Congress has started the campaign against the Centre's renaming and 'dilution' of the MGNREGA. Under it, party has planned 30 such meetings. htc...
