PRAYAGRAJ, July 21 -- An elderly man died after reportedly inhaling poisonous gas inside a dry well while attempting to rescue a goat that had fallen into it, in Pratapgarh's Fatanpur police station area on Sunday afternoon, authorities said. Two others are under treatment at a hospital, they added. District fire officer Atul Tripathi said that the well had turned into a gas trap due to a lack of oxygen. The goat could not be rescued. According to reports, a goat belonging to Rajaram, a resident of Purey Bichhur village, had fallen into a dry well located next to his house. On hearing his cries for help, several villagers gathered at the spot. Seventeen-year-old Pritam, son of Achhelal Pal from nearby Birapur village, was the first to climb into the well with a rope to rescue the goat. However, he lost consciousness soon after descending. When Pritam failed to respond to calls from above, Dayaram Pal (48), also from Birapur, climbed down to rescue him but also fainted. Another man, Babu Pal (65), Rajaram's cousin, entered the well but suffered the same fate. The family raised an alarm and informed the police. A team from the fire department and an ambulance arrived at the scene. All three were pulled out and rushed to the Raniganj Trauma Centre, where doctors declared Babu Pal dead....
