One booked over derogatory remarks on women, deities
Haldwani, Jan. 9 -- Nainital police have registered a first information report (FIR) against a female social media influencer for allegedly making derogatory remarks against women and deities of Uttarakhand in a video that went viral on social media, a police officer aware of the matter said on Thursday.
Mukhan police station in-charge Sushil Joshi said the complaint was filed by Juhi Chufal, daughter of Puran Singh Chufal and a resident of Rampur Chakulwa, Haldwani.
"In her complaint, Juhi Chufal stated that a video circulating on social media shows Jyoti Adhikari, wife of Gopal Singh Adhikari and a resident of Haripur Lalmani Kishanpur Ghuddaura, waving a sickle in a public place and making highly objectionable and vulgar remarks against women, the culture and deities of Uttarakhand," Joshi said.
According to police, the complainant alleged that in the video, the influencer made comments claiming that women of Kumaon had "lost their strength" and ridiculed their participation in festivals. The video allegedly includes remarks comparing women and deities to being "fake" and making statements that were deemed insulting to religious sentiments and women of the region. "Through these statements, ancient gods and goddesses, as well as women of Uttarakhand, have been gravely insulted. The complainant stated that she was deeply hurt by the remarks made in the video," the police officer said.
Based on the complaint, police have registered a case against Jyoti Adhikari under Section 27 of the Arms Act and Sections 192, 196, 299 and 302 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). "An investigation has been initiated and further action will be taken based on the findings," Joshi added.
Jyoti Adhikari had earlier come into the public eye during protests following the Ankita Bhandari murder case.
Recently, she had also made statements claiming that she would sell her jewellery to provide financial assistance of Rs.1 lakh to Ankita's parents, which had drawn attention on social media....
