Olympian Shahid's house among eight buildings demolished
VARANASI, Sept. 30 -- Affected by the project to widen the Kutchehary-Sandaha Road, eight buildings, including a portion of the house of Olympian, late Mohammad Shahid, were demolished on September 28. Owners had been compensated over a month ago.
The PWD carried out the demolition in the presence of police on the road leading from the Police Lines to the Kutcheri intersection. The PWD deployed six bulldozers to demolish the buildings obstructing the road construction.
Sharing information regarding the demolition of a portion of the house of late Padma Shree Mohammad Shahid, the public works department stated that as per records of Varanasi Nagar Nigam, there are nine shareholders in the building number- S 6/93 affected by the road widening project. Of them, five shareholders, including Mohammad Shahid's wife, received compensation from the PWD a month ago and gave their consent to demolish the affected portion. The wife and children of Shahid reside in their house in Khajuri, stated the PWD.
Owners of these buildings, which were obstructing the road widening project, were given the opportunity to demolish them, but they did not demolish their buildings even after receiving compensation....
