LUCKNOW, May 31 -- A contractual staff nurse was terminated and a doctor suspended following the death of a newborn on Wednesday night at Autonomous State Medical College in Kanpur Dehat district. "The probe team found the staff nurse was responsible for the death as she was absent at the time of duty. Also, the senior resident was suspended as the committee also found her responsible in the matter," said deputy chief minister Brajesh Pathak. The 28-year-old woman had reached the medical college and was taken for delivery at 1.30am in the night to the mother and child wing attached to the college. At around 3.30am, the delivery took place and according to the family, the newborn fell down from the delivery table. The newborn was taken to sick newborn care unit, but at around 10.30am the child died. The probe found the staff nurse was not present on duty when the incident took place. "Such an incident has tarnished the image of the department and health sector. Laxity will not be tolerated and strict action has to be taken," said Pathak who is medical education minister of state. Apart from the primary probe, the director general medical education has written to the state medical faculty, representative body of the national medical commission to constitute an ethics committee and probe the matter in one week.
