North India's first toxicology lab opens
LUCKNOW, Dec. 14 -- The 21st Annual National Conference of the Indian Society of Toxicology (IST), TOXOCON-21, began at King George's Medical University (KGMU) on Saturday.
The conference was inaugurated by deputy chief Minister Brajesh Pathak, who lauded the efforts of KGMU and the IST in advancing toxicology services, education, and research.
He emphasised the role of such initiatives in improving patient outcomes and strengthening healthcare systems, according to a press release.
A major highlight of the inaugural ceremony was the launch of the Analytical Toxicology Laboratory and the Poison Information Centre (PIC) at KGMU.
The Analytical Toxicology Laboratory, the first of its kind in North India, is designed to assist clinicians in diagnosing and managing poisoning cases, enhancing patient care and emergency response.
The Poison Information Centre, the first in Uttar Pradesh, represents a significant step forward in toxicology services and public health preparedness. Both facilities will operate under the supervision of Dr Shiuli Rathore.
During the ceremony, IST Special Awards were announced. Dr Nikhil Paul received the IST Young Toxicologist Award (Clinical Toxicology), Dr Anjaly Asok was awarded the IST Young Forensic Toxicologist Award, and Dr Adarsh, Director of the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), received the IST Award for Distinguished Service in Toxicology.
The inaugural function was attended by Prof Soniya Nityanand, Vice-Chancellor of KGMU; Dr Anoop Kumar Verma, Organising Chairman of TOXOCON-21; Dr Shiuli Rathore, Organising Secretary; Dr Nishat Ahmed, President of the Indian Society of Toxicology; along with eminent toxicologists, clinicians, forensic experts, researchers, and delegates from across India.
TOXOCON-21 brings together experts from clinical, forensic, analytical, and academic toxicology to discuss contemporary challenges, emerging trends, and future directions.
