MEERUT, May 21 -- A newborn baby girl with a cleft lip was left abandoned by her paternal and maternal grandmothers near the under-construction municipal corporation office in Shahjahanpur on Monday afternoon. The infant, found in a shallow pit, was rescued by nearby labourers and taken to the Government Medical College. She is currently receiving medical treatment and is reported to be in stable condition, according to the police. According to eyewitnesses, around 12 pm on Monday, two women arrived near the construction site carrying the infant in a cloth bag. Before reaching the site, they were seen lingering near the Kakra-Kakrakund bridge for a long time. Noticing the presence of bystanders, the women moved towards the construction site, placed the baby in a pit, and left the area quickly. The baby's cries drew the attention of local workers and passersby, who found her lying in the pit. The incident was immediately reported to the police. Officers arrived on the scene and transported the baby to the Government Medical College for treatment. Dr Rajesh Kumar, the principal of the medical college, confirmed that the baby had a cleft lip and initially experienced difficulty breathing. "Her condition has improved with timely treatment," he said. Inspector Ashwani Singh of the local police station confirmed that the baby's parents have been identified. According to preliminary investigations, the mother, a resident of a neighbourhood in the Sadar Bazar police station area, gave birth to the baby via caesarean section at the Government Medical College on May 16. She was discharged on Monday afternoon and returned home. Later that same day, the infant was taken by her grandmothers and abandoned at the construction site. Further investigation revealed that the bay was couple's second daughter, and her cleft lip may have been a factor in the family's decision to abandon her. Doctors had reportedly advised the parents to seek specialised treatment for the condition in Lucknow. However, instead of following medical guidance, the family attempted to discard the child. Childline and child welfare committee (CWC) were alerted and are now actively involved in the case. The district probation officer Gaurav Mishra confirmed the family's involvement and said counselling sessions have begun for all family members. "Once the counselling is complete and appropriate safeguards are established, the baby may be returned to the family," he added. The police have initiated legal proceedings and confirmed that appropriate action will be taken against those responsible for this act of abandonment....
