New labour codes will speed up ease of doing business: UP govt
Lucknow, Nov. 23 -- After the central government on Friday notified four new labour codes, which have rationalised 29 existing labour laws, the Uttar Pradesh government on Saturday said the step will ensure social security guarantees and minimum wages for workers in the state, according to an official statement by the state government.
These reforms will lay a strong foundation for a robust labour ecosystem, advancing towards the vision of a self-reliant state by 2047, while simultaneously accelerating the "ease of doing business," the statement added.
The four labour codes are -- the Code on Wages, 2019, the Industrial Relations Code, 2020, the Code on Social Security, 2020 and the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020.
Many older labour laws, enacted between 1930 and 1950, did not cover modern work categories such as gig workers, platform workers, and migrant workers.
The new labour codes extend legal protection to all of them. They will redefine Uttar Pradesh's employment and industrial ecosystem, a spokesperson said, according to the statement.
Workers will now be entitled to minimum wages, appointment letters, equal pay, social security benefits, double wages for overtime, fixed-term gratuity, and 100% health insurance coverage in hazardous sectors. Women will now have the right to work night shifts with their consent, according to the statement....
