NER shifts 166 stations to solar power, saves Rs.1.41 crore
GORAKHPUR, Nov. 23 -- In a significant step toward sustainable infrastructure, the North Eastern Railway (NER) has successfully shifted 166 railway stations to solar power. With rooftop solar panels now illuminating station premises, the zone has generated over 3.82 million units of clean electricity in the current financial year, resulting in savings of Rs.1.41 crore. Chief public relations officer Pankaj Kumar Singh said, "Through well-planned efforts in energy conservation, we are witnessing encouraging results. We are adopting large-scale non-conventional energy sources, especially solar power, and ensuring the use of energy-efficient devices to reduce overall consumption."
The initiative is supported by a total installed solar capacity of 8,036 kW across the zone. Solar panels have been installed not only at stations but also at offices, medical facilities, training centers, coach complexes, factories, rest houses, and other railway infrastructure, marking a major milestone in NER's transition toward energy-efficient operations. 980 GPS fog-safe devices installed to boost winter train safety Preparing for the winter fog season, NER has strengthened its safety mechanisms by installing 980 advanced GPS-based fog-safe devices on both passenger and goods trains.
