Nepalese man among 5 held for killing tribal woman in Assam
Silchar, Aug. 18 -- Five people, including a resident of Nepal, have been arrested from Assam's Dima Hasao on charges of murdering a 48-year-old tribal woman, police said.
According to the police, the woman, a native of Dima Hasao's Lonku area, went missing on August 13 while returning home from her tea stall and her body was recovered from a forest area the next day.
"A case was registered on the basis of the First Information Report (FIR) lodged by her family members...we have arrested five men, including a resident of Nepal in this connection," a police officer said.
The arrested people - Stephan Hanse (32), Abdul Mannan (39), Satya Acharya (45), Ravendra Singh Rana (37) and Ayon Chowdhury (30) - were working on a government construction project in the area, police said. According to Dima Hasao senior superintendent of police (SSP) Mayank Kumar, they have been arrested under BNS sections 104(1) (murder), 3(5) (common intention) and 61(2)(a) (criminal conspiracy).
"The motive is yet to be ascertained. We are collecting DNA samples to look into that angle. No kidnapping angle has come out till this point of investigation," he said.
The incident sparked protests in Dima Hasao. Some protestors - including Dimasa Mothers' Association - alleged that the woman was gang raped and murdered.
"We strongly condemn the brutal gang-rape and murder of a tribal woman in Umrangso. We demand immediate action against the perpetrators..." Dimasa Mothers' Association said in a statement on Sunday.
SSP Mayank Kumar, however, said the victim's family members did not mention rape in the FIR and the autopsy report is awaited. "If we find signs of rape in the reports, appropriate sections will be added," he said....
