New Delhi, May 11 -- Hours after the Indian Premier League was suspended amid escalating border tension between India and Pakistan, the inaugural edition of the Neeraj Chopra Classic was also called off. The top flight javelin competition, a World Athletics event, was scheduled to be held in Bengaluru on May 24, and some of the world's top javelin throwers had confirmed their participation. The event was headlined by India's two-time Olympic medallist and reigning world champion Neeraj Chopra. "In light of the current situation, the inaugural edition of the NC Classic stands postponed until further notice. The decision has been made after careful thought and consultation, with the well-being of athletes, stakeholders, and the broader community as the top priority," a statement issued by Team NC Classic said. "We believe in the unifying power of sport. But, in this critical moment, standing firm with the national matters most. All our gratitude and thoughts at this point are only with our Armed Forces, who are at the forefront of our nation," the statement added. The organisers said a revised schedule of the NC Classic will be provided in due course. There was considerable excitement in the build-up to NC Classic and tickets were put up for sale last week. India's biggest athletics star and a global track and field icon Chopra has been closely associated with the organising of the event along with JSW Sports and AFI. Chopra had himself invited world's best throwers to be part of the competition. The event was granted a world championships qualification status by World Athletics. Besides Chopra, two-time world champion Anderson Peters, American Curtis Thompson, the season leader (87.76m), 2016 Olympic champion Thomas Rohler of Germany, Rio Olympic silver medallist and 2015 world champion Julius Yego of Kenya, Japanese Genki Dean, Brazilian Luiz Mauricio da Silva, and Sri Lankan Rumesh Pathirage had confirmed participation. Top Indian throwers Sachin Yadav, Rohit Yadav, Sahil Silwal, and Kishore Jena were also in the mix and were looking to push for world championships qualification in front of home crowd. The event was earlier scheduled to be held in Panchkula, Harayna, but later shifted to Sri Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru due to logistical reasons. With the WA calendar nearly packed leading up to the world championships in Tokyo in September, it remains to be seen whether the organisers can manage a slot this year. Last month while announcing the launch of the NC Classic, Chopra had spoken about how eagerly he was looking forward to bring an international athletics event of this stature in India and wanted to make it an annual affair with more disciplines added to it. Chopra opened his season at the Potch Invitational Meet in April, with a throw of 84.52m. He will be in action at the Doha Diamond League on May 16 next and head to Ostrava Golden Spike for a meet on June 24. Earlier on Friday, the IPL was suspended as tension mounted between India and Pakistan since Thursday evening.
