NDRF rescuers to take part in GLOF disaster response workshop
New Delhi, Oct. 26 -- National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel posted in Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh will participate in a special three-day workshop for preparedness, management and response to Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) disasters starting October 29 in New Delhi, officials familiar with the matter said.
The personnel participating in the workshop titled "Flash Floods and GLOF Risk Reduction at Vulnerable Locations along Mountain River Basins", will be from the NDRF's 2nd, 13th, 14th and 15 battalions, they said. According to official estimates, of the nearly 7,500 glacial lakes in the country, at least 195 have been identified as high-risk and vulnerable to potential outburst events.
Officials said the rescuers, who will later brief and train their teams at their respective battalions, will examine case studies of past GLOF and flash flood events during the workshop at the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) campus. "This is the first of its kind boarding course for the rescuers with a focus on GLOF. These rescuers are from areas where such disasters have been reported in the past. The workshop is being conducted by the NDMA's NIDM in the backdrop of many such disasters that happened in recent years," an official said. "This will be a detailed course that will take a deep dive into understanding different types of glacial lakes and their hazards. There will also be a session on why moraine dams are inherently weak. By the end of the course, participants should be able to interpret hazard/risk maps of high risk lakes, and identify vulnerable downstream communities. The sessions will ensure that a GLOF risk mitigation strategy is in pace with detailed action related to warning, rescue and relief," the official added....
