NCW recommends appointing new HoD of IMS-BHU
VARANASI, July 19 -- The National Commission for Women (NCW) has recommended BHU, Varanasi, to appoint a new head of department of the trauma centre, IMS-BHU. It is currently being headed by prof Saurabh Singh. The NCW has directed the BHU, Varanasi to submit a detailed report within two weeks.
The NCW conducted a hearing on July 14 in the matter of a woman professor's complaint of harassment at workplace against Dr Singh. On behalf of the BHU, IMS-BHU director, prof SN Sankhwar and chairperson of the Women's Grievance Cell, prof Royana Singh, appeared physically before the commission and the complainant was present virtually during the hearing at the NCW. After hearing all the parties and considering the facts of the case, the NCW issued the direction and made the recommendation.
The NCW requested the vice-chancellor to change the internal committee as the Commission has received numerous complaints pertaining to harassment at workplace at BHU. The NCW has directed the complainant to file a fresh complaint before the new internal committee. In her complaint, the woman professor alleged that Dr Singh and one Ashish Singh harassed her at the workplace. She alleged that she was threatened by Dr Singh on various occasions that he will tarnish her image/character which will affect her career.
Meanwhile, a group of student leaders also demanded the removal of current HoD and threatened to launch a campaign if their demand was not fulfilled.
