Nature enthusiasts, pupils mark Wetlands Day
LUCKNOW, Feb. 4 -- Students, environmental enthusiasts, and citizens gathered at the CG City Urban Wetland on Tuesday to celebrate World Wetlands Day, organised by the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA). The programme highlighted bird-watching, creative expression, and public awareness about wetland conservation, an LDA release read on Tuesday.
The day began with bird-watching sessions. Schoolchildren and visitors observed birds through binoculars while experts explained species behaviour, their role in the wetlands, and the importance of biodiversity.
Avnish Awasthi, advisor to the chief minister, inaugurated the CG City Urban Wetland wall and the newly constructed souvenir shop. He said, "The CG City Urban Wetland is an excellent example of balancing urban development and environmental conservation. It not only conserves biodiversity but is also a vibrant natural heritage for future generations," Prathamesh Kumar, vice-chairman, LDA, added that the souvenir shop will help make conservation initiatives sustainable by promoting related products among the public.
Students showed their creativity through painting and extempore competitions. Bhavika Yadav secured first position in painting, followed by Lakshmi Verma and Janhvi. In the extempore contest, Preeti Yadav won first place.
Members of the Gomti Task Force joined students in a cleanliness drive. The programme also featured a panel discussion on wetlands, biodiversity, and urban development. Experts, including DFO Sitanshu Pandey and Dr Asad Rahmani, emphasised the role of wetlands in groundwater recharge, flood control, and temperature regulation....
