MEERUT, April 29 -- Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) president Naresh Tikait on Monday criticised the Centre's decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan in consequence to the Pahalgam terror attack, saying it would affect the common people, especially farmers, in the neighbouring country even as he called for the strictest action against those involved in the April 22 attack. While on his way to Haryana, Tikait stopped at Vishwakarma Chowk in Nakur town to meet BKU workers. Talking to reporters there, he emphasised that farmers, whether in India or in Pakistan, would suffer greatly without access to water. "It is unfair for the entire population to pay the price for the mistakes committed by a few individuals," he said. In a video clip being circulated on social media, Tikait stressed that it would be wrong to hold the entire Pakistani population responsible for terrorist activities. "Some elements in Pakistan do promote terrorism, but that does not make every citizen guilty," the farmer leader added. He urged the government to take firm action against terrorism without resorting to breaking agreements like the Indus Waters Treaty. Expressing grief over the Pahalgam terror attack, Tikait said the incident has drawn widespread condemnation not only from India but also from the global community. He called for the country to unite and stand firmly with the government in the fight against terrorism. "The time has come for a decisive, no-compromise action against terrorism," he said. Raising concerns about internal security, Tikait questioned how terrorists managed to carry out the attack and demanded a thorough investigation into possible security lapses. He also alleged that government policies leading to cuts in military strength were worrisome. Tikait extended his condolences to the families of the Pahalgam attack victims and expressed his intention to meet the aggrieved families. Talking to HT, Tikait said, "My statement was misconstrued by a few people. I just gave my opinion, but it doesn't mean that I am against the national interests or oppose any reasonable move by the government of India to counter Pakistan- sponsored terrorism."...
