Meerut, Aug. 15 -- Aase alias Asharam (38), an accused arrested two months ago after being shot in a police encounter, died under suspicious circumstances in the Rampur district jail on Wednesday evening. While jail authorities claim he fell in the toilet, his family has alleged murder and demanded a fair probe. A resident of Chaukoni in the Saifni police station area of Rampur district, Asharam was shot and arrested by Bilari police during an encounter. He had been lodged in jail since his arrest and was facing several charges, including attempted murder, fraud, forgery, kidnapping, and offences under the Pocso Act. According to jail superintendent Alok Singh, Asharam had been walking with the aid of a stick due to his injuries. At around 4 pm on Wednesday, he reportedly went to the toilet and fell. Other inmates found him unconscious and raised an alarm. He was taken to the jail hospital and then referred to the district hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Upon receiving information, Civil Lines police reached the spot, and the prisoner's family was notified. At the district hospital mortuary, the deceased's brother, Dan Singh, alleged that Asharam was beaten up in jail on Tuesday and murdered. SP, city, Kumar Ran Vijay Singh, said a post-mortem examination is being conducted to ascertain the cause of death. Jail superintendent Singh maintained that the inmate had been unwell for a long time and was treated at Meerut Medical College just 15 days earlier.
