Myanmar factions' rift widens: Mizoram body
AIZAWL, July 10 -- Efforts by Mizoram-based NGOs and representatives of the state government to mediate peace between rival pro-democracy groups from Myanmar's Chin State remain stalled, with no significant progress achieved so far.
The Central Young Mizo Association (CYMA) announced on Sunday that the Chin Defence Force and the Chinland National Defence Force agreed to a temporary ceasefire.
However, the truce was broken just a day later.
"Facilitating peace between the two has become increasingly difficult," said Fabian Lalfakawma, assistant secretary of CYMA.
"We convened a meeting on Sunday in Aizawl with leaders, who are currently residing here, from both sides. They agreed to a ceasefire, but the situation on ground quickly unravelled the next day," he added.
Lalmuanpuia Punte, an MLA and political adviser to Mizoram chief minister Lalduhoma, echoed the concerns. "With deep-rooted political instability and ideological differences among the Chin ethnic sub-groups, mediation is extremely challenging."...
